Funding Boost
We’re pleased to report that the LCA has been successful in its application for a grant from Events ACT to help run next year’s Light Up Lyneham. We had a similar grant for 2025.
We will still need to rely on our supportive sponsors to bring an even better event together, with more entertainment and activities for everyone to enjoy.
Illuminated Displays
For many years most of the displays around the wetlands for the Lantern Walk have been the product of our ‘creative director’, Jocelyn, who has indicated 2026 will be her last year, and with fewer displays.
Consequently, we are hoping to build capacity within the local and extended community to create installations. To encourage families, groups and individuals to consider creating a display, we’ll be offering a cash prize for Best Display. Registrations are now open! Click tiny.cc/mylul26 or scan the QR code below.
This is a great project for a family or group to take on. Help will be available for those wanting it, including some materials.
Lantern Workshop
We have funding to hold a free Lantern Workshop in the lead up to Light Up Lyneham. We’ll be opening the workshop for registrations in a few months time. At the moment we’re looking for people with a creative streak who would like to help run the workshop. If that’s you, please get in touch at contact@lyneham.org.au
Storage
A few months ago, the LCA was also successful in securing a grant that enables us to purchase a shipping container which will be used to store much of the materials we need for Light Up Lyneham and other occasions. It’s become too much to keep in someone’s garage.
After a lengthy search for a suitable location for the container, we are delighted with the positive response from the O’Connor Tennis Club, and extremely grateful for their cooperation. We hope to have the shipping container in place in the coming weeks.

At a recent working bee in the park in our newly planted regeneration area we spotted a Golden Sun Moth! This moth is under threat across South East Australia due to the destruction of its native grassland habitat. In the ACT much of the original native grassland has been built over and there are only a few remnant areas left where the moth has been found. It was therefore a great surprise and delight to find it in our local park and shows that our park could have high ecological value if we give it a chance to regenerate back to a more natural state. Unfortunately the nearby grassy area the moth probably lived in was mowed a few days later and its fate is unknown.
The Friends of Magpie Hill has had its last major working bee for the year but we will still be doing watering of our new plants over the Summer break, particularly if it is hot and dry. Please contact us if you would like to help water the plants occasionally. We will be back to our regular schedule of working bees at the end of January.
Working Bees are held at Lyneham Commons on the first Sunday of the month. Tasks may include: weeding and clearing, planting some ground cover type plants, mulching paths, pruning wattles and other trees. For more information email lyneham.commons@gmail.com
