Welcome to the latest newsletter from the Lyneham Community Association.

 COMMITTEE COMINGS AND GOINGS

At our annual general meeting a few weeks ago, we elected a new committee:

Gordon McAllister – Secretary

Angela Seymour – Treasurer

Karlene Dickens – ordinary member

Timothy Holt – ordinary member

Kate Bradney – ordinary member

Lina Koleilat – ordinary member

We also said farewell to our Chair, Trevor Vickers and our Secretary Angela Rymer who have decided to retire from the committee.

Trevor has been a member of the LCA committee since its inception in 2015, and has been a driving force behind Light Up Lyneham and other LCA community events. Behind the scenes he has also managed our IT systems and communications. We thank him very much for all the time and expertise he has contributed to the LCA over the years.

Angela has been secretary for the last couple of years and also initiated and project managed the development of the Lyneham Heritage Trail. We hope you have seen the new map at the shops and the heritage signs at key sites around the suburb. She has put an incredible amount of effort into the Heritage Trail which records the fascinating history of our lovely suburb for future residents to enjoy.

Another committee member who has retired is Nicole Deen who did a fantastic job in organising the ‘I Spy My Lyneham’ photographic exhibition last year which made us realise the beauty that can be found in our suburb.

Trevor, Angela and Nicole have made significant contributions to increasing the community spirit in Lyneham and we thank them greatly.

We need more people for the committee

You may have noticed from the committee list above that we do not have a Chair or Deputy Chair, as no-one put their names forward for these roles at the AGM. It would be great if a couple more people offered to help on the committee. I am acting as Chair for the interim so you don’t need to jump straight into the top job – there are plenty of little ways you could help the committee.

I am happy chat to anyone who wants to find out more about what the committee does. Just send me an email at contact@lyneham.org.au

PLANNING ISSUES

Through our involvement in the North Canberra Community Council we get to hear about various planning issues in the area. Current issues that have been mentioned in the NCCC are –

A development application was recently submitted for intensive redevelopment on the old Macarthur House site on the corner of Wattle St, Macarthur Ave and Northbourne Ave into 4 apartment blocks and an office block – see Macarthur House redevelopment

Comments are sought by the ACT Government on two new pieces of legislation that will impact on new development across Canberra:

    • Planning system reform – draft legislation to replace the current Planning Act (comments due 15 June)
    • Urban Forest Bill which replaces the current tree protection legislation (comments due 2 June)

Community Garden Grants Now Open

Community groups and owners corporations can now apply for a 2022-23 Community Garden Grant to make our city more ecologically sustainable and become more climate resilient. Find out more about previous grants and how to apply here. Applications close 8 July 2022.
