February 2021

Here is news of some interesting things happening around our lovely suburb!

Suitcase Rummage – save the date!

Come to Magpie Hill on 18 April for a suitcase rummage sale. It will be happening on the basketball court in the park, off Lambert Street Lyneham.

Organised by the Magpie Hill Neighbourhood with support from the LCA, this promises to be a fun community event with stalls and entertainment. And you might even pick up a bargain!

People are invited to bring along a suitcase of household items to sell, give away or swap. Registration will be necessary and details will be announced soon!

 Lyneham Photo Competition

The LCA is in the planning stages of a creative new event – Lyneham Community Photo Connections! We are looking for residents who have an interest in building community through collecting and displaying photos of interesting things around our lovely suburb.

Join us on the planning group to connect with others in Lyneham and North O’Connor, share your ideas and energy and help us make it a success! All you need is a few hours to spare in the next few months, with the event taking place in April-May.

Lyneham Heritage Trail

The LCA received an ACT Government Heritage Grant to write a history of Lyneham and to develop a walking trail to highlight the many sites of heritage significance around the suburb. We are hoping to launch the trail in April during the ACT Heritage Festival. Watch out for further details!

Planning Issues

A proposal to rezone part of the Canberra Racecourse (which is actually part of Lyneham) for development has been announced. The racing club wants to build commercial and apartment buildings up to 6 stories along the Barton Highway and Randwick Road boundaries. Details are on their website.

The old ACT Government depot at the corner of Wattle and Goodwin Streets is being demolished to make way for a demonstration housing project.

        Working Bees

Join the Lyneham Commons group at their working bee on the first Sunday of each month. See their Facebook page for details.

For other working bee opportunities, check the Banksia St Wetlands group Facebook page.

     Gazebo and table for loan

If you’re holding a social or community event and need an 3mx3m portable gazebo or 2m long folding table, LCA now have them for short-term loan to members.

Just contact us with your dates. To avoid disappointment it’s probably best to arrange a week or two in advance. There is no charge but a refundable bond will be required.

New Members

We love new members, and want even more! So we’re asking you to encourage your friends and neighbours to join.

The more members we have, the more support we can provide each other and the more attention we can get from our local politicians.

Joining is free and open to everyone over 16 years of age, living in Lyneham or north O’Connor. Join online at lyneham.org.au/join.

You can always email us at contact@lyneham.org.au or go to our Facebook page.

We look forward to seeing you around the suburb some day soon!

Cheers
The LCA Committee
