Bluebell Sustainable Business Awards

Light Up Lyneham was nominated in the Sustainable Event category of the Bluebell Sustainable Business Awards sponsored by the ACT Government, announced on Thursday 11 September.

Although Light Up Lyneham didn’t win the category, the LCA is extremely grateful to Julie Evans, the SEE Change Wasteless team, and the Merici College Sustainability group for the extraordinary effort they put into minimising and managing the waste at Light Up Lyneham.

You can read about the winners in each category.
Another Radford College Talk
LCA committee member Gordon McAllister gave a couple of great talks to two groups of visiting Radford College students. As part of their year 7 studies, the students compare living in an established suburb (Lyneham) with a new suburb (Whitlam). The LCA (through Gordon) has been providing these talks for a couple of years now.
The Green at Dickson
The Dickson Tradies has lodged a Development Application for a substantial project which they say is “designed to deliver new open spaces, residential and hospitality offerings, and vibrant community amenities”. The club building, adjacent carpark and nursery will be replaced by seven apartment blocks of 6 to 13 storeys with one of them incorporating a new Tradies club. There will be a new public green space in the centre, facing onto Sullivans Creek. It will certainly be a big change to that part of Dickson shops.

If you have any concerns about the project you can provide comments by 1 October. You can find out more at their website and by viewing the development application.
BCC appeal against ACAT decision

Those who have been following the appeal by Brindabella Christian College against the 2023 decision by ACAT to close the car park used by BCC will recall the date of the appeal had been set for 17 and 18 November.

The appeal, brought by the previousl owner of BCC, is being continued by the new owners, Christian Community Ministries (CCM). At a directions hearing in the Supreme Court recently, CCM was successful is asking the court to vacate the appeal hearing dates. CCM is apparently changing barristers, and argued that there was insufficient time in the 2 and a half months between then and the hearing dates for a new barrister to prepare. It was also suggested that CCM may seek to change the grounds for appeal, and the outcome it seeks from the appeal.

There is a further directions hearing in the coming days at which a new appeal date might be set (sometime in 2026).

Regeneration is happening in the Park!

If you have travelled along Wattle Street next to Magpie Hill park recently you will have noticed major earthworks being done to remediate the eroded track across the corner of the park. The sight of plant guards is expanding as Friends of Magpie Hill undertake mass planting of a range of native plants in the new garden beds to improve the biodiversity in the park.

This project was initiated by the Friends parkcare group (which itself was initiated by the LCA) and funded by the ACT Government’s Adopt-a-Park program.

The Friends of Magpie Hill will be working in this area at its next working bee on Sunday 28 September from 9.30am. Anybody is welcome to help, or just visit and say hi!
