April 2025 Newsletter

The AGM of the Lyneham Community Association will be held at the Lyneham Primary School Staffroom on Sunday 18 May 2025, at 2pm.

The AGM will consider reports on the previous year, and provide an opportunity to discuss the direction the LCA should take in future. The AGM will also elect a new committee.

Please consider joining the committee. More information on what’s involved is available on our website, and by emailing us at contact@lyneham.org.au.

Nominations are now open for all positions on the committee. Under our constitution, nominations received by 2pm on 11 May (7 days or more before the AGM) may automatically see the person elected to the position. See lyneham.org.au/about for details.

The LCA will again be offering a guided walk of the Lyneham and O’Connor Heritage Trail on 27 April, as part of the ACT Heritage Festival. Find out some of the history of the area from its colonial settlement days and the creation of the suburb as we know if from the 1960s.

The Trail was the result of a successful grant application and a lot of work by a previous LCA committee member a few years ago.

Registration for the walk is necessary (though free), as numbers are limited. Currently, the walk is fully booked, but there is a waitlist. See the event details for more information.

Save the date!
Another great Light Up Lyneham is being planned, including the fantastic Sunset Lantern Walk to the illuminated wetlands and return, led by the Canberra Prosperous Mountain Dragon and Lion Dance.

If you’re interested in being part of this year’s Light Up Lyneham as a performer, stall holder, installation artist, or volunteer, please complete the online form, or email contact@lyneham.org.au.

Talk to Radford College Students

Our wonderful committee member Gordon gave a great talk to a couple of classes from Radford College recently, who were comparing the liveability of established and new suburbs in Canberra.

This is the second year the LCA has provided these talks. The teachers seemed pretty happy with the excursion’s usefulness and mentioned they may ask LCA to assist again in second term.

Brindabella Christian College

The Supreme Court appeal by BCC against the December 2023 ACAT decision, originally due in April, has now been set for 13-14 November 2025.

One the current BCC issues, media reports suggest there will be a (now shortened) period of public consultation following the announcement of the preferred buyer of BCC. The announcement is apparently expected before the commencement of Term 2, so in the next two weeks.

We haven’t yet been advised of when the consultation period will be.

The following item was contributed by Gary Pianegonda, an LCA member.

I am disabled.  Please save me from falling!

Frankly, my disability is not crucial to this appeal, but now that I have your attention …

For health and relaxation, I take walks (on crutches) along the beautiful, tree-lined streets of Lyneham and suburbs nearby: O’Connor, Dickson and Ainslie.

These walks and the changing scenery are delightful during three seasons; but not in autumn.

This is when our colourful, deceptively cute trees bombard the pathways below with their lethal leaves and marble-like nuts.

I’ve fallen several times when my feet or crutches skidded suddenly on slimy, decaying leaves or wooden ball bearings.

Undoubtedly, the small surface area of my crutch tips with limited grips, exacerbate the risk of slipping.

Nevertheless, several able-bodied friends have similarly taken a tumble on our perilous pathways.

I appreciate that an unavoidable downside or treelined streets is the annual shedding of leaves and nuts.

However, it is obvious on my walks that paths in front of some houses have not been cleared for a very long time, if ever.

I also appreciate that these paths are on public land and they are not the responsibility of the home occupants adjacent to them.

Nevertheless, I appeal to the thoughtfulness of anyone privileged to have trees and a path in front of their house.

For the sake of your family, friends and neighbours; for all people, young, aged and infirm; please occasionally sweep or blow away the buildup of our autumn hazards.

Do you know you can report any issues in the neighborhood to the ACT Government’s Fix My Street page online? Issues and concerns such as: damaged or blocked paths, request tree planting, reporting graffiti and litter etc. Go to https://www.accesscanberra.act.gov.au/city-services/fix-my-street
