April 2023

It’s that time of the year when we hold our Annual General Meeting and review what we have achieved over 2022 and get ourselves organised for the coming year. However for this to happen we need more people to volunteer to be on the Committee as a few of us will be retiring this year. Read on for more information about the AGM.

Notice of Annual General Meeting
The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Lyneham Community Association will be held on Sunday 30 April at 3.30 pm in the Lyneham Primary School Hall – enter through the school gate on Hall Street.

Feel free to arrive from 3 pm to chat to other LCA members, find out more about the LCA and share your ideas of what you would like to see the LCA doing in the future. The formal part of the Annual General Meeting will start at 3.30 pm.

We need new committee members

The main function of the AGM is to hear reports of last year’s activities and to elect a new committee. By joining the committee you can help make Lyneham a great place to live.

There are 8 positions on the committee:

  • Chair
  • Deputy Chair
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Four ordinary committee members
In addition to the formal roles, there are a number of other tasks performed by the committee which could be taken on by other members:
  • Public Officer – responsible for liasing with the ACT Incorporated Associations registrar.
  • Membership communication and development
  • Newsletter production
  • Social media (Website, Facebook,Twitter)
  • Event organisation and promotion, eg Light Up Lyneham
  • Drafting of submissions and letters to MLAs
  • Liaising with the North Canberra Community Council and other residents associations
  • managing our grant projects, eg tree planting in North Lyneham.
Committee meetings are generally held once a month in one of the members’ homes. How much more time you want to put into LCA activities is up to you. If you’d like to find out more about being on the committee, drop us a line to contact@lyneham.org.au and someone will be in touch.

Nominations to be on the Committee are now open

Under the LCA constitution, any member of the LCA can nominate in writing for a position on the committee up to 7 days before the AGM.

If only one person nominates for a particular office-bearer position or up to 4 people nominate as ordinary committee members before the 7 day deadline then these people are automatically elected.
If insufficient nominations are received for any of the positions before the deadline then nominations can be made at the AGM.
If there is more than one nomination for particular office-bearer positions, or more nominations than the number of vacancies for ordinary committee members, then a ballot will be held at the AGM to elect these committee members.

You can nominate for a committee position simply by downloading and completing the nomination form and emailing it to contact@lyneham.org.au. You will need two other members to endorse your nomination but if you need help finding them then email us and you can expect to find two current committee members willing to endorse your nomination.

The deadline for receipt of emailed nominations is 3pm Sunday 23 April

A number of our current committee members are stepping down so if you want the LCA to continue then please nominate to be on the committee. We particularly need some new office-holders, ie Chair, Deputy Chair, Secretary or Treasurer.

Rejuvenation of any group is important for its continuing development. If you’d like to find out more about helping the LCA or have ideas on how we can build an active, caring and resourceful community in Lyneham and north O’Connor, then please come along to the AGM and tell us what you think. We look forward to seeing you.

Light Up Lyneham is Back!!

The Light Up Lyneham festival is back, with a tentative date for the event of 24 June 2023. This year the LCA are co-hosting the event with the Lyneham Primary P&C.

We are looking for volunteers to join a Light Up Lyneham planning subcommittee. Please email for more information or to get involved: light.up.lyneham@gmail.com or via the LCA email: contact@lyneham.org.au

Working Bee Sunday 30 April 9.30 am to 11 am, near Earle Street

The Magpie Hill rejuvenation project continues, with the Friends of Magpie Hill now holding working bees generally on the last Sunday of each month.

Most of the work is focussed on weeding and regenerating the no-mow area between the basketball court and Earle Street to create a haven for indigenous native plants. We would also like to revitalise the picnic table here and do more erosion control around the park.

Anyone is welcome to join us in our working bees. To participate in Park Care activities you are required to register your attendance (this will also give you insurance cover for any accidents). Please RSVP by emailing us at
magpiehill@lyneham.org.au

North Lyneham park regeneration project

We are also looking for more volunteers to help implement our tree planting project in three neighbourhood parks in North Lyneham for which we received an ACT Government grant. If you are interested please email the committee.

Petition to Stop Private Car Parks on Protected Public Green Open Spaces

The LCA have lodged a petition with the ACT Legislative Assembly in response to ongoing concerns about the Brindabella Christian College car park.

The car park is sited on protected open space which is intended to provide green open space for the enjoyment and recreation of everyone in the community, as well as flora and fauna habitats, and environmental corridors. Car parks for private institutions is a prohibited development on the site under the current planning legislation.

We are concerned because the car park was formalised without permission on protected public green space, and the design of the car park puts children from both schools and other active travel road users at risk. This article in the Riotacthas more detail.

The petition has received over 900 signatures so far and we hope it will put the public spotlight on this issue. Please sign the petition and share with friends and family.

Other updates on the car park: The LCA lodged an application for a ‘Controlled Activity Order’ late last year, seeking that the ACT Government address the construction of the car park without a Development Application. We are still waiting for a response. We are also waiting on an update of the traffic analysis study that TCCS conducted on the area (not specifically focused on the carpark itself). We hope this will be a step in the right direction to keep all road users safe.

We love new members, and want even more! Please encourage your local friends and neighbours to join. The more members we have, the more support we can provide each other and the more attention we can get from our politicians.
