Light Up Lyneham began in 2017, from a suggestion by a local resident who had experienced lantern walks while overseas. The idea was adopted by the Lyneham Community Association, which saw the possibility of incorporating a lantern walk into an event loosely based on the Party at the Shops events run around the time of Canberra’s centenary celebrations.
2017
The first Light Up Lyneham was held in the area between the shops, using the overhanging verandahs for cover. There was no stage or electricity, and a couple of bands played at the Wattle St end of the area. Without any sponsorship our budget was a couple of hundred dollars, for leaflet printing.
The Lantern Walk was led by the Canberra Prosperous Mountain Dragon and Lion Dance group, who have been part of Light Up Lyneham ever since.
