Light Up Lyneham 2023

Light up Lyneham is back, from 3:30pm to 8pm on Saturday the 29th of July.

This year the event is being co-hosted by the LCA with support from the Lyneham Primary P&C. Light Up Lyneham will be an enchanting community celebration that illuminates Lyneham Shops and Wetlands with a dazzling display of lights, colour, music, wonder and joy.

Light Up Lyneham will showcase a diverse range of local musicians and performing artists including the beloved Canberra Prosperous Mountain Lion Dance Group who will lead the lantern walk and Canberra’s very own Magician who will be wowing the crowd and holding magic workshops. We’ll also have local musicians including Mr Tim, Toby Cole and local school bands, and circus acts and even Drag Storytime. There really is something for everyone. Please check out the Light Up Lyneham website or the Light Up Lyneham Facebook Event page for the full list of performers, and the incredible sponsors who have helped us bring back Light Up Lyneham as a free and inclusive community event.

Petition to Stop Private Car Parks on Protected Open Spaces

Our petition to Stop Private Car Parks on Protected Public Green Open Spaces has received over 1000 signatures. We are eager to protect public green open spaces in our region, and ensure that public land is managed with respect, transparency and the safety of our communities and environment.

It’s not too late to sign, but hurry because the petition closes at the end of July.

Farewell to Mee Sing

The Mee Sing Restaurant has closed its doors after 58 long and memorable years at the Lyneham Shops. Family run since 1965, Mee Sing has played a crucial role in the creating a friendly, vibrant, and welcoming atmosphere at the Lyneham Shops. The restaurant holds a special place in the hearts of Lyneham residents who have formed cherished memories visiting the restaurant.

The Mee Sing Restaurant Family recently reflected that “Lyneham Shops has always been about the community and the community spirit. We have been more than neighbours and small business owners. We have been family and we have been a community”.

Mee Sing plans to hold a food stall at Light Up Lyneham and we are sure that many locals will be looking forward to the scrumptious Mee Sing food that we know, love and miss.

Active Travel to School in Lyneham: ACT Health Promotion Grant

The LCA were recently successful in being awarded an ACT Health Promotion Grant. The grant will support us to implement a behaviour change program aimed at reducing barriers to cycling to school for Lyneham children and young people.

The program will run over three years. The first year will focus on understanding the specific place-based obstacles that inhibit children from riding to school in Lyneham.

Then we will aim to remove some of the ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ obstacles, along with engagement activities to promote behaviour change and build a shared love of bike riding and lifelong active travel habits. We will be working with Pedal Power and the Lyneham Primary School, and welcome others to get involved. More details to come!

Working Bee Sunday 30 July 9.30 am to 11 am, near Earle Street

The Magpie Hill rejuvenation project continues, with the Friends of Magpie Hill now holding working bees generally on the last Sunday of each month.

Most of the work is focussed on weeding and regenerating the no-mow area between the basketball court and Earle Street to create a haven for indigenous native plants. We would also like to revitalise the picnic table area and do more erosion control around the park.

Anyone is welcome to join our working bees. For more information and to be added to our mailing list please email magpiehill@lyneham.org.au

North Lyneham park regeneration project

We are also looking for more volunteers to help implement our tree planting project in three neighbourhood parks in North Lyneham for which we received an ACT Government grant. If you are interested please email the committee.
Lyneham Commons
