Dryandra Street woodlands project

The ACT Government has awarded a Nature in the City Grant of $18,869 in FY21 to Friends of Dryandra Woodlands and the Molonglo Catchment Group to restore bushland in O’Connor.

This volunteer work aims to restore the woodland on the wedge of public land that separates the Black Mountain and Bruce Ridge sections of Canberra Nature Park, the land bounded by Dryandra and Fairfax streets and Barry Drive. Degraded areas of the bush are being over run with weeds, including African Lovegrass, Blackberry, Serrated Tussock and some non-local trees.

Most of the funds will be used to employ contractors to undertake weed spraying and removal of large woody weeds. Friends of Dryandra Woodlands volunteers will undertake plant surveys, weed control, planting and rubbish removal. Volunteers are wanted to help with this work:

	Lyneham Election Forum Join us on Sunday 30 August at 2pm at the Lyneham Primary School Hall (entry off Hall street). The Lyneham Election Forum will give you the opportunity to hear from candidates in the electorate of Kurrajong in the upcoming ACT election. Following a brief statement from each of the main parties, you’ll have the chance to ask a question of the candidates. The forum will be followed by afternoon tea, with an opportunity for informal discussion with the candidates. Complimentary refreshments will be available. RSVP. LCA Annual General Meeting You are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the LCA on Sunday 30 August at the Lyneham Primary School Hall. It will start at approximately 3pm following the election forum. The main function of the AGM is to hear reports of last year’s activities and to elect a new committee. If you’d like to find out more about helping the LCA or have ideas on how we can build an active, caring and resourceful community in Lyneham and north O’Connor, then please come along to the AGM and tell us what you think. Nominations to be on the Committee are now open There are 8 positions on the Committee: - Chair - Deputy Chair - Secretary - Treasurer - 4 ordinary committee members. Under the LCA constitution, any member of the LCA can nominate in writing for a position on the committee up to 7 days before the AGM. If only one person nominates for a particular office-bearer position or up to 4 people nominate as ordinary committee members before the deadline then these people are automatically elected. If insufficient nominations are received for any of the positions before the deadline then nominations can be made at the AGM. If there is more than one nomination for particular office-bearer positions, or more nominations than the number of vacancies for ordinary committee members, then a ballot will be held at the AGM to elect these committee members. You can nominate for a committee position simply by sending an email to contact@lyneham.org.au indicating the position you are interested in. Nominations require endorsement by two other LCA members, but you can expect that will be provided by two current committee members. The deadline for receipt of emailed nominations is 3pm Sunday 23 August.
Magpie Hill Rejuvenation Project We recently had a productive meeting with the ACT parkcare coordinator about the mechanics of starting up a parkcare group and what assistance they could provide in undertaking work in the park. We will soon be registering "Friends of Magpie Hill" as an official parkcare group. Our consultant Edwina Robinson is working on the final landscape plans that will be sent to all those who have expressed interest in the group. 	Planning Matters One of our members rediscoverd a very interesting document buried in the ACT government planning website. The Lyneham Neighbourhood Plan was released in 2003 but seems to be have been forgotten by everyone. If any members were involved in its preparation or public consultation we would love to hear from you as it could be a useful exercise to update it to present a plan for what the community wants to see in the suburb rather than the developers.

	Lyneham Commons Working Bee Lyneham Commons is a community-run food forest located between the Lyneham shops and the Sullivan’s Creek bike path. Their next monthly working bee is on Sunday 6 September from 11am to 2pm. Come for a couple of hours of easy gardening. Socialise with local gardeners, learn about the food forest and take away some skills to use at home. More details are available on their Facebook page.
